CRYOBIOLOGY MUSEUM

Preserving Cryobiology and Cryopreservation History

The CryoMuseum is devoted to preserving artifacts of cryobiologists, cryobiology and cryopreservation historical significance, celebrating the field’s achievements, and making pre-internet science available for all.

The CryoMuseum initiative has been recently established under the auspices of the Society for Cryobiology. It aims to preserve the rich history of cryobiology and highlight its significant contributions to the world. The physical museum will be located in Fort Collins, Colorado, and will serve as a repository for important artifacts, such as historic equipment used in cryopreservation, old photographs, presentations, documents, journals – much seminal work of the mid-20th century is at risk of being lost as scientists move on and memories fade.

In addition to its physical location, our “CryoCurators” are developing a virtual museum. This online platform will feature collections of photographs from conferences, meetings, and key events in cryobiology’s history, we aim to make this a valuable and interesting resource for cryobiologists as well as non-scientists. We are working to translate and digitize older books and journals that are currently not accessible online, ensuring that important scientific knowledge is preserved and can help current research.

As we prepare for the formal launch in the coming months, we are seeking donations to support our efforts. For any inquiries, please contact us.

The CryoMuseum has been formed under the auspices of The Society for Cryobiology. The Society for Cryobiology was founded in 1964 to bring together those from the biological, medical and physical sciences who have a common interest in the effect of low temperatures on biological systems.

Recently, as the generation of scientists from the founding days of the Society for Cryobiology have begun to pass away, the urgency to preserve items of historical significance to the cryobiology community has become a pressing need. This newly established Cryobiology Museum aims to address that need to preserve these items for future generations of cryobiologists.

If you would like to volunteer your time to this initiative or you have digital or physical items you would like to be considered for the collection please contact us.

ABOUT THE SOCIETY FOR CRYOBIOLOGY
The purpose of the Society is to promote scientific research in low temperature biology, to improve scientific understanding in this field, and to disseminate and apply this knowledge to the benefit of mankind.

The objectives of the Society are fulfilled in two primary ways. First, the Society organizes an annual scientific meeting dedicated to all aspects of low-temperature biology. This international meeting offers opportunities for presentation and discussion of the most up-to-date research in cryobiology as well as reviewing specific aspects through symposia and workshops. Second, the Society publishes a journal, Cryobiology, which is the foremost scientific publication in this area.

The Society for Cryobiology is 501(c)(3) non-profit organization devoted to research in low temperature biology and medicine.
